My Process
Design
This course was designed for cashiers at utilities who need to learn how to manage pledges in our software. I designed it with realistic scenarios that allowed the learners to practice the exact process in the software. In this low risk environment, learners can click and navigate through the process without any fear of interfering with the actual system or deleting anything.
The pledge process is very dry, and I felt that adding a narrative/story to break up the course would provide the learner with a mental break. I introduced "Hellen FunGenerous" as a vibrant persona that could an engaging twist to the training content.
My goal was to organically integrate the knowledge check into the theme while also presenting simple questions that tied back to the course objectives.
Immersive experiences tend to help with learning retention, so I wove the theme of the talk show into multiple aspects of the course.
Development
I created the set of the Hellen FunGenerous show to resemble the actual set of the show as closely as possible.
It’s important to respect adult learner’s time, so the course includes triggers that would allow them to skip narrative sections and go straight to the practice.
For this project, I recorded all of the lines, and then used the audio software to alter the pitch and simulate different voices for the characters in the course. My role requires fast development, and this method allowed me to quickly record all roles without outsourcing a character to another instructional designer.
I used Vyond to create the narrative scenes because this tool allows me a fair amount of creative flexibility. I am to create compelling scenarios quickly and save templates to use later as well.
I included each answer to the questions on a different layer, so the learner would receive tailored feedback depending on the response.
